A Strange Tree of Hundreds of Gravestones:
The old church of St Pancras in London is known for its tree with tombstones. Once the church has a large cemetery, but during the Industrial Revolution needed a gasket rail and she had to go through this cemetery. The church gave the land to the cemetery for the construction of the railway, but now they had to go from the graves.
This work was commissioned by a young man Thomas Hardy, by the way, in the future, he became a famous writer. Thomas decided to dispense with the ashes of the dead with dignity and rebury the remains. The remains reburied in another cemetery.
Tombstones transport was expensive and Hardy built it around the tomb while the trees were young. The tree grew and swallowed several central tombstones. Now it is a tree – a local landmark and a place of memory of Thomas Hardy. (x)
